Focus. It’s challenging when there are so many distractions and multiple demands on our time and resources. However, F.O.C.U.S. is exactly what you need to live an extraordinary life.
That’s right. In achieiving life goals, follow One Course Until Successful. It’s best to choose one course to dedicate yourself to and see how it plays out over a span of several months, preferably one year.
When you F.O.C.U.S., it’s easier to set a goal and design objectives that drive you closer to achieving that goal. After a period of time you must assess your progress and readjust your F.O.C.U.S. accordingly.
One of our MindFuel Training clients takes an afternoon between Christmas and New Years and heads to a coffee shop, alone, for her personal “year-end review.”
She looks back over the previous year, month by month, and jots down at least one professional thing she accomplished that month. It takes about an hour. At the end of that exercise, she feels a tremendous sense of achievement when she reads over that list.
It’s absolutely imperative to acknowledge what we’ve done well. Too often, it’s just the opposite: we let ourselves get hung up on what we haven’t accomplished.
Her year-end review segues into goal-setting and creating objectives for the next year’s F.O.C.U.S. She assesses what worked and what didn’t and modifies as needed. Once she is satisfied with the “road-map” she’s created, she prints it out and posts it in a prominent place in her office.
Splashing a visual expression of her F.O.C.U.S. goal and objectives on the wall reminds her to stay on track and reflect periodically throughout the year.
(She also writes a short-term goal each week and shares it with her accountability partner. When they meet on Fridays, they report to one another whether or not they accomplished their goal.)
Why not try it? All you have to lose a couple hours of your time. Conduct your own "year-end review" and then create your own F.O.C.U.S. goal and objectives for the next year. Chances are you’ll be less likely to veer off your path with a detailed road-map.
